How Often Should You Service a Low-Mileage Car in India?

Only driven a few thousand kilometres this year? The calendar can still make your service due. Here is how to read the schedule and plan the right visit.

Low mileage does not automatically postpone servicing. When your vehicle's maintenance schedule specifies both time and distance, use the limit that arrives first. The correct interval comes from the booklet for your model year and engine, not a universal rule for all cars in India.

Should I follow kilometres or months?

Both, when both are specified. Hyundai India's fluids and consumables guidance, for example, lists a regular engine-oil interval of 10,000 km or one year, whichever comes earlier, and refers owners to their manual. This does not establish the schedule for another brand or every older Hyundai.

An example for a car driven 3,000 km a year

Suppose your own manual specifies a 12-month or 10,000-km interval. If the relevant service was completed in October and you drive 3,000 km over the next year, the time limit arrives the following October. Waiting until the odometer reaches another 10,000 km would miss that time requirement. This is an illustration; check how your manufacturer anchors the service dates.

How do I find my exact maintenance schedule?

  1. Identify the model year, engine and transmission from your vehicle documents.
  2. Open the matching owner's manual or service booklet.
  3. Find the periodic-maintenance table and its notes.
  4. Check whether your usage falls under a separate severe-use schedule.
  5. Compare the requirements with dated invoices and odometer readings.

Maruti Suzuki's car-care guidance also directs owners to the periodic-maintenance section in their handbook. Hyundai owners can locate the appropriate edition through its model-year manual selector.

Does every item need replacing at each visit?

Read the task beside each component. Inspection and replacement are different instructions. Ask the workshop to mark which tasks are due by time, which by mileage and which follow an inspection finding. A calendar-based visit is not a reason to replace every component on a generic major-service list.

What should I bring to the workshop?

Bring the last service invoice, the current odometer reading and any notes about changes in the way the car operates. Ask the adviser to write down the next due date and mileage after the visit. If previous records are missing, explain that so the workshop can recommend a documented baseline rather than assuming all earlier work was completed.

Can I skip service because the car feels normal?

Use the specified schedule to make that decision. Normal operation alone does not establish that scheduled work is unnecessary. If there is a warning light or a new fault, consult the manual and workshop about it rather than waiting for the next routine appointment.

How should I budget for low-mileage servicing?

Request an itemised quote for the tasks actually due. A kilometre-based online estimate may not include all time-based work. Our service cost calculator can help with a reference range, but use the manual and workshop assessment to settle the job list.

Is six months or one year correct?

Neither is a universal answer. Use the interval specified for your vehicle and usage conditions.

Does a service package change when maintenance is due?

Check the maintenance schedule separately from the package's payment and coverage terms. Read our AMC comparison guide when weighing the quoted costs.
