CNG Car Maintenance Cost in India 2026 — Is It Really Cheaper?

A CNG car costs a little more to service than its petrol twin — spark plugs, kit checks, and the mandatory cylinder test add up. Here is what CNG servicing really costs in 2026, and whether it still works out cheaper.

CNG cars have exploded in popularity across India — a WagonR CNG or Dzire CNG can cost under ₹2 per km to run, less than half the fuel cost of petrol. But there is a catch owners rarely hear about at the showroom: a CNG car needs slightly more frequent servicing, and a few jobs cost more. So is CNG actually cheaper to own once you add up service costs? Mostly yes — but only if you know what you are paying for.

Why CNG servicing is different

A factory-fitted CNG car runs the same engine as its petrol twin, but the engine works harder on gas. Combustion is hotter and drier, which means a few wear items age faster:

  • Spark plugs wear out sooner — often every 20,000–30,000 km on CNG versus 40,000 km or more on petrol.
  • Engine oil degrades a little faster because of the higher combustion temperature, so oil-change discipline matters more.
  • Valves and valve seats see more heat; on high-mileage CNG cars this can mean earlier attention.
  • The CNG kit itself — regulator, filter, and pipes — needs periodic inspection, and the cylinder needs hydro-testing every few years by law.

What a CNG service actually costs in 2026

For a typical Maruti CNG hatchback or sedan, a standard 10,000 km service lands around ₹3,000–₹4,200 at an authorised centre — roughly ₹300–₹500 more than the petrol version, mainly due to the extra CNG-system checks. A major service with spark plug replacement runs ₹6,000–₹8,500.

  • Maruti WagonR / Dzire / Ertiga CNG: basic ₹3,000–₹4,200, major ₹6,000–₹8,500
  • Hyundai Aura / Grand i10 Nios CNG: basic ₹3,200–₹4,500, major ₹6,500–₹9,000
  • Tata Tiago / Tigor CNG: basic ₹3,000–₹4,000, major ₹6,000–₹8,000

Independent garages experienced with CNG cars typically charge 25–35% less for the same work. You can check the exact figure for your model and city on the Maruti Suzuki service cost page or run your car through the estimator.

The CNG kit inspection and cylinder test

Two CNG-only jobs are non-negotiable. First, the kit inspection — regulator, low-pressure filter, and leak check — should happen at every service; the low-pressure filter is usually replaced around every 20,000 km at ₹600–₹1,200. Second, the CNG cylinder must be hydro-tested every 3 years (5 years for some newer types) to stay road-legal, costing ₹1,500–₹3,500. Skipping the hydro-test can invalidate your insurance and fitness certificate.

Factory-fitted vs aftermarket kit

A company-fitted CNG car keeps its full warranty and is tuned by the manufacturer. An aftermarket kit voids the engine warranty on many brands and can cause tuning issues if fitted poorly. If you are buying used, always ask whether the kit is factory or aftermarket — it changes both resale value and what a service centre will agree to work on.

Does CNG still work out cheaper overall?

Yes, comfortably — for most owners. A CNG car might cost ₹1,000–₹2,000 more per year to service, but the fuel saving over 12,000–15,000 km of city driving is usually ₹40,000–₹60,000 a year versus petrol. The service premium is a rounding error against that. CNG only stops making sense if you drive very little (under 8,000 km a year), where you never recover the higher purchase price and the extra spark-plug and filter costs start to sting.

Three ways to keep CNG service costs down

  • Stick to the oil schedule — do not stretch oil changes just because the car "feels fine". Hot CNG combustion punishes tired oil. See our oil change cost guide for the right grade and interval.
  • Buy quality spark plugs — cheap plugs fail fast on gas. Iridium or the OEM-spec plug lasts far longer.
  • Move to a trusted multi-brand garage after warranty — CNG-experienced independents do the same work for less once you are out of the warranty window.
