Is Car Free Service Really Free in India? Charges Explained

A free-service coupon does not necessarily mean a zero bill. Here is how to separate covered labour from paid parts, consumables and optional work.

Free car service does not automatically mean everything is free. The coverage depends on your vehicle's service booklet, coupon and any maintenance package you purchased. Before booking, ask the workshop which labour operations are covered and which parts or consumables will be charged.

What does a free service actually cover?

For a concrete example, Hyundai India's March 2026-onward Verna manual describes the first three periodic services as labour-free. It says consumables, wheel alignment and required replacement parts outside warranty are chargeable. That is a model-specific example, not a promise about every manufacturer's offer. See the Verna owner's manual, section 1-5 and check your own booklet.

Why am I being charged for oil and filters?

A labour waiver and a parts allowance are different benefits. Your quote should show the oil product, quantity, filter part number and charge for each item. Ask whether the replacement is due at this visit under your exact engine's schedule. A separately purchased service package may include items that a standard coupon does not.

What should I ask before authorising work?

  • Which free-service coupon or package applies to my vehicle?
  • Which scheduled labour operations will show as waived?
  • What parts and consumables are due, and what does each cost?
  • Which proposed jobs are optional or based on an inspection finding?
  • What is the total payable amount, including applicable taxes?

Ask for this breakdown on the estimate or job card. If the adviser discovers additional work, request a revised quote before approving it. A verbal promise that the visit is free is less useful than a written list of inclusions.

Do I have to accept cleaning and protection packages?

Ask the adviser to separate scheduled maintenance, diagnosed repairs and elective cosmetic work. For an extra treatment, ask what problem it addresses and where it appears in the manufacturer's recommendations. Decide on each item individually rather than accepting or rejecting the entire package because of its name.

Can a free-service coupon expire?

Check its time and distance conditions before you book. Do not assume a coupon remains usable because the car has covered very few kilometres. The workshop can confirm eligibility using your delivery date, odometer and service record. If you bought the car used, ask it to check the original delivery record.

How much should the visit cost?

There is no single correct free-service bill for all cars. Compare the written quote with the same engine, service stage and covered benefits. Use our service cost estimator as a starting reference, then verify the actual inclusions with the workshop. A displayed zero estimate should not override your coupon's terms.

Quick answers

Does free service include replacement parts?

Only if the applicable coupon, warranty decision or purchased package includes them. Ask for the coverage against each charge.

What if the final invoice is higher than the estimate?

Ask the adviser to identify the added jobs and the corresponding approval. Keep the original estimate and revised authorisations together with the invoice.
